Yoko Tsuno

Yoko Tsuno
(by Roger Leloup)
See also: Comic Errors

Roger Leloup learned the craft in Studio Hergé.  He sort of specialized in all sorts of machinery: he drew for example the different trains and cars and so in the newer version of Tintin's De Zwarte Rotsen (The Black Island).  With Yoko Tsuno he can unleash all that machinery.  Yoko is an engineer who gets involved, together with her friends Paul and Ben, in all sorts of adventures in which technology plays a major role.  They even get in touch with aliens, living on our own Earth, below us...

Nr. Cover Title Story
1 Cover Yoko Tsuno Trio in het onbekende
(Trio in the unknown)
Ben, Paul and Yoko form a camera team.  They plan on doing a report on a subterranean river, to see where it surfaces.  For that purpose Ben puts some dye in the water, so they can trace it.  Seconds after the color spreads, the water starts to rise.  And seconds later the level drops again, taking the trio with it through a tunnel, then a glass tube, to drop them off on some kind of a filter.  And they find themselves surrounded by blue people that don't understand their language...

(The satanic organ)
The trio is making film-shots about the Rhine and its surroundings.  Just while Paul makes a picture of her, a girl falls into the water and almost drowns.  Later it turns out she didn't fall all by herself...  Yoko decides to help the girl find out what is going on.  Apparently this attempted murder was meant to cover up for another murder, that of the girl's father...

A drilling-island near Martinique has found materials that look a lot like the globe Yoko got from Khany after their first adventure together.  Yoko, Ben and Paul decide to travel to Martinique.  There they learn that the pressure underneath the surface of the Earth is rising to alarming levels.  And it seems an unknown craft is stuck near the legs of the floating island, with someone inside it.  Someone blue...
4 Cover Yoko Tsuno Avonturen met elektronika
(Adventures with electronics)
A collection of short stories in which, of course, technology plays a big part.  There is for example this man who has developed a remotely controlled spider, complete with miniature camera, to be used in nuclear research.  It is far more flexible and easy to use than the robot-arms used there.  But the man needs money, and gets in the grip of a criminal, who sees another use for the little machine...
5 Cover Yoko Tsuno Seinen voor de eeuwigheid
(Signals for eternity)
An unexpected landing near a radio-telescope brings Yoko in contact with an Englishman who is setting up an expedition to bring back a very old British plane.  There are just a few difficulties.  Like the location: a crater in one of the farthest corners of the world, where Russia, China and Afghanistan meet.  And the cargo of the plane: secret British Intelligence documents.  Enough to attract less friendly people...
6 Cover Yoko Tsuno De 3 zonnen van Vinea
(The three suns of Vinea)
Khany contacts Yoko, and asks them to be picked up by a space-ship.  She refuses to say much more, until they reach a space-station near Saturn.  There she reveals that they plan to go to Vinea, a trip of three months.  It is unknown if the planet survived, or if there even is still life on it - let alone humanoid life.  But they'll find out soon enough that time hasn't stopped on Vinea either...
7 Cover Yoko Tsuno De grens van het leven
(The edge of life)
A letter brings Yoko to Ingrid.  The letter doesn't tell of Ingrid's illness, nor does it tell it isn't written by her.  That mystery is solved soon, when her cousin tells Yoko what he discovered about Ingrid's illness: it is a vampire.  Well, not the one from cheap horror stories, but someone seems to be using Ingrid to test artificial blood...
8 Cover Yoko Tsuno De titanen
(The titans)
Yoko and her friends are asked to come to Vinea, in the hope that their knowledge of some animals on Earth could help the Vineans deal with non-Vinean life that was or still is on their planet.  A leg has been found that indicates a giant insect, and since it was enhanced it is presumed that the being must have intelligence.  An expedition is set up to go and research an area where non-Vinean plants grow, to see if they find something about these insects.  But the insects find them...

(The daughter of the wind)
Yoko and her friends land in Hong-Kong.  They are immediately taken on a long trip by a friend of Yoko's father, who tells her about the rivalry between her father and Ito Kazuky.  Her father wants to prevent typhoons, Kazuky wants to make them.  The experiments of both men are getting out of hand...
10 Cover Yoko Tsuno Het licht van Ixo
(Ixo's light)
Khany investigates a strange phenomenon: every 5 years a light can be observed on Ixo, a satellite of a giant inhabitable planet in Vinea's solar system.  Ixo used to be used for storage of toxic waists by the Vineans 2 million years ago.  Upon arrival they have to fight a giant robot that seems to want to destroy them.  After that they find a new construction, meant to transport light together with other matter.  They follow the transporter beam, and discover that Ixo is no inhabited at all...

12 Cover Yoko Tsuno Prooi en schaduw
(Prey and shadow)
On their way along the shores of Scotland Yoko and Paul almost hit a young woman that crosses the street in panic.  She claims "they" will get her, and wants a ride.  Too late, "they" found her already.  "They" are none more than her father, living on a nearby castle, and his servants.  They invite Yoko and Paul to the castle to spend the night, since there is some minor damage to the car.  Before getting to the castle they learn about ghosts and spells that haunt the castle...
13 Cover Yoko Tsuno De aartsengelen van Vinea
(The archangels of Vinea)
When Khany and Yoko investigate the origins of a life container with a child, kept by an old woman near the coast, they spot a huge machine on the sea, at the horizon.  Khany goes there to investigate it, and Yoko looses all contact with her.  So she goes herself and arrives there when the machine, which seemed to be something to refresh air or so, is returning below the surface of the sea.  Since obviously Khany is down there too somewhere, she has no option but to follow, with the help of a strange man that needs no breathing assistance below the water-surface...

(The dancer from Bali)
Monya invites Yoko and her friends to Bali, to show her a golden statue she found. . Well, "found"...  She took it, in 1350 AD.  She did so to save the statue, since in 1350 a volcano eruption would have destroyed everything.  But now a danser will be convicted for stealing it...
