This series reminds me a lot of a few books by Wilbur Smith I read years ago, and of a book about the discovery and conquest of Africa. The series is quite historical, and that means the story is being squeezed into that which is a pity. But overall it seems pretty correct, rich in information and at the same time a rather well told adventure-story.

1 | Als een vlucht zwaluwen (Like a flock of swallows) |
Kevin is a poor Scottish shepherd, and his only way out of his poverty is the army according to him. That leads him to South Africa, at a moment when the tension starts to rise between the British and the Zulu-nation. Kevin saves a young Zulu-girl, who then considers herself as his. He later meets Dundee, a Scotsman living with the Zulus. He believes the British arrogantly overestimate themselves. Shimli, the girl, fears for the life of "her" Kevin. And Kevin? He'll soon know what it is to be at breathing distance of tens of thousands of Zulus...
2 | Zwart als de hel (Black as hell) |
Kevin and Dundee, together with a few scattered officers, are the only survivors of the battle. They ought to run like mad, but they decide to warn the soldiers at Rourke's Drift about what happened. At first nobody believes them, but when the story is confirmed by other refugees the handful of men starts to prepare to defend themselves to the thousands of Zulus who are only hours away from them...
3 | Sterk als het gras (Strong like grass) |
The information about Rorke's Drift is scattered and confusing. Further south the confusion causes panic, but so far there is no reason, as Rorke's Drift holds.  Even if there are only a handful of British against thousands of Zulus. And those Zulu's don't feel like going away without a victory...
4 | Te vuur en te zwaard (By fire and sword) |
Dundee, who finally has his horse back, accepts an assignment by general Chelmsford. He is to try to reach his people, if anyone is left of them, and see if he can convince them to assist the British, as scouts or so. Dundee accepted half-hearted, but this was the only way he could go to his corral. Before he can get there though he has to go right past a few Zulu regiments, and a British fort where the commander doesn't want to let Dundee go...
5 | Sneller dan paarden (Fasten than horses) |
March 1879. In London the parliament debates about sending additional troops to deal with the Zulus, and in Zululand yet another commander looses a battle because he underestimated the Zulus. Kevin was sent to Middle drift, to general Chelmsford, with a letter, and he should return immediately to Pearson with the answer. But Chelmsford isn't there anymore, so Kevin has to travel further north, with an escorte this time since he goes through less safe areas. Upon arrival there he is assigned to the Border Horse regiment, a section of a larger army that plans to go and clear some hills. Madness, caused by underestimating the enemy - again...
6 | De Drakenkam (The Dragon Crest) |
Late March 1879. Despite warnings from both Zulus and experienced soldiers - like Kevin - the British army is trapped on top of the Dragon Crest. With the help of a few old Napoleontic rocket launchers, and with the loss of many lives, the British manage to escape, and the Zulus celebrate yet another victory. But the tide is turning, the British army regroups in Kambula and digs in. Against a giant Zulu army they don't have much chance but to provoke an early attack to avoid that the Zulus will come from everywhere... |
