Gothenburg (Sweden) 2007

Poseidon med brunnskar the oldest house in town Slussen
The Opera the Viking and Lilla Bommen canals around the inner city

The end of September is maybe not the best time to visit Göteborg, but I took my chances.  Even with not quite promising weather the city is an inviting place to walk through, with lots of things to see relatively close to each other.

The first half day I had there I just strolled around, through town, along the canals, along the river,...

In the evening Ramberget, squeezed between Volvo and the harbour across the Göta älv, offers a very nice view on the city.  If the clouds cooperate, that is.

Next day: rain. So I went for a few indoor things, like Palmhuset, and later Göteborgs Stadsmuseum (where I wasn't allowed to take pictures).  Coming from a cold humid outside into the warm moist Palmhuset that place certainly was a sweaty experience..

Later the weather cleared a bit, but not much, so Maritiman (again mostly indoors) was my next destination.

Maritiman is quite impressive, even if it is "just" a bunch of older ships lying there in the water.  I have never been on board of a war vessel, or a floating lighthouse, let alone a submarine, so being there was already quite something.  The puppets on the Fryken were a bit corny but they gave a good view on life on board a freight vessel.  Where I spent most of the time (I think, I sort of forgot time) was on board the Småland, a labyrinth of narrow corridors and even narrower hatches, crammed with equipment and machinery. Easy to imagine the claustrophobic experience being on board this ship during a fight must have been.

Skansen Kronan Skansparken Skansen Kronan

There are quite a few hills in and around the city, offering quite nice views. Skansen Kronan is one of the two remaining towers defending the city, long ago.

Viewing a city from the water always has something special.  It wasn't that long ago a boat-trip through a city was a first for me, but now I sort of look forward to it.  Paddan brings you through the city's canals, and a bit on Göta älv. Even when it rains.

It's amazing these boats can even leave the city.  The hairdresser (frisören) and certainly the cheese-slicer (Osthyveln) leave hardly any space above the boat.  At first I thought it was a joke when they asked to go and sit on the floor of the boat...  Luckily the vessel wasn't too full, maybe I should go back on a hot Summer day and stand on Osthyveln (which is a set of bridges, by the way) just to have a picture of a mass of people sitting on top of each other on the bottom of the boat ;-)

So I had another visit at Maritiman, this time from the other side.  Sitting in a small low tourist-boat the Viking and the warvessel Småland looked even more impressive.

Sjömanstornet Sjöfartsmuseet Sjöfartsmuseet

Another museum that's definitely worth a few hours of your time is Sjöfartsmuseet, the Maritime Museum, right next to a statue for the fishermen, depicting a wife waiting for a husband that probably won't return from the sea.

Inside are a set of aquaria and an inpressive collection of ship's models of all shapes and sizes, completed with models of how the harbours were built, or of modern plants lake Götaverket, something the low view from Paddan simply isn't sufficient for.

Masthuggskyrkan View from Stigberget View from Stigberget
Masthuggskyrkan Oscar Fredriks Kyrka Oscar Fredriks Kyrka

Another hill, another view.  Masthuggskyrkan this time, on a stone-throw from another church (the gothic Oscar Fredriks Kyrka), and a good view on Götaverket, but not a model this time.

And when returning to the parking lot (free, thanks to the Göteborgs Pass) the neogothic Oscar Fredriks Kyrka decided to attract a little bit of sun for a change.

Slottsskogsparken Slottsskogsparken Slottsskogsparken Slottsskogsparken Slottsskogsparken Slottsskogsparken

Slottskogsparken is the place to be to get a surprisingly large green patch almost in the middle of the city, with surprisingly many different things to do or see.  I strolled mostly around the zoo, and had coffee and some pastry in one café, and dinner in another.

Älvborgsbron Älvborgsbron Älvborgsbron
Älvborgsbron Älvborgsbron View from Älvborgsbron

Älvborgsbron - the Älvborgbridge - connects the city to Hisingen, the island north of Göteborg.  Impressive building to walk under, and yet another niece viewpoint when walking over it.  There are even small terraces with benches to enjoy the view over the city.

Tjörnbron Strandnorum (at the other side of the water) Stansvik Koholmen
Runsten (Hoga) View on Kalvon Udevallabron Udevallabron

Göteborg itself is surrounded by small islands, and to the north smaller and bigger islands form a beautiful archipelago, even if the clouds don't really cooperate.
