Cover Shelena Shelena Haiti, 1873. A father curses his son, but the maid has seen it and she brings red peppers to the son, peppers he should plant where he decides to settle. José, the son, decides to travel around the world, but he doesn't get much further than what should become the Panama canal, where he decides to look for a job. When the man he shares a room with is killed he goes to the man's family to bring the news. José stays there for 16 years and watches the man's baby girl grow into a beautiful young woman. He marries her. 16 dark years of hard labour are followed by 16 years of happiness, but that ends when José is shot down...
